HP Inkjet Printing Notes

Update Well it turns out that there is at least one other HP printer with different driver options to those discussed here — Alan's HP Deskjet D2360 has been troublesome, but has a 'Brochure' option that might do the trick. Further updates to follow I hope...

For some dumb reason most (all?) HP inkjet printers are set with a default border at the top of the paper of about 3mm but at the bottom of the paper of about 17mm! When printing landscape (as with our booklet files) the silly bottom border becomes a completely insane left hand border which chops off at least the first two characters from each line. However, this can be fixed.

  1. Click to zoomClick to zoomFrom the Windows Start menu select the Printers and Faxes entry.
  2. Click to zoomClick to zoomIn the Printers and Faxes window use the Right Mouse Button to click on your HP printer (mine is a Photosmart 2570) and select Printing Preferences...
  3. The Printing Preferences allows you to set up various sets of configuration options suitable for printing different things in different ways (documents, photos etc.). These options can be grouped together into what HP calls 'Print Task Quick Sets' that can have whatever name you choose to give them. Here we'll set up a Quick Set call 'Booklet' which avoids the daft default printer border.

    1. Select the Paper/Quality tab and set the paper size to A4 if it isn't set already.
    2. Select the Effects tab and set the Minimize Margins option near the bottom.
    3. Now give a new name to this configuration by typing 'Booklet' into the Print Task Quick Sets box and click the Save button.
    4. Click OK to finish.

Now that this is done, when you get to the Print screen from Adobe Reader you can click on the properties button and select this Quick set.
