Floods of Biblical Proportions

F
loods of Biblical proportions continued to affect much of the Country following our Rally back on 22/24 June and continuing throughout July. Following the last 'major' downpour on Friday 20th July 2007, Stow on the Wold, the nearest town to Gassing's Rural Retreat came close to topping the league with 111mm falling! Fortunately the R.R. is located on the side of a hill and although the torrential rain over-topped the ditch running past the house down to the main road, we escaped lightly. Despite a raging 'torrent' running through the Gassing 'workshop' it's presence appeared to be of little consequence once things dried out. Even the mower started first time as soon the grass was dry enough to cut again!

I'm continuing to blame this summer's record breaking rainfall for the lack of stirrings in the Gassing Microcar Rest Homes!I'm continuing to blame this summer's record breaking rainfall for the lack of stirrings in the Gassing Microcar Rest Homes! Despite the proximity of the MOC's 2007 International Rally to the R.R. (I can actual see Wychwood Golf Course if I take a short walk to Wyck Hill transmitter mast) 7935MK remained garaged in Campden and the Reliant TW9, propping up a load of junk at the R.R.! A pity since we would have made a significant contribution to this year's MOC turn-out, which seemed rather weather depleted, despite a relatively dry weekend, much like our own Rally three weeks earlier.

The preceding weekend's Bath Micro-car Rally was also missed as a result of 'fixture congestion' and although Saturday was clear, Sunday was occupied by the Cotswold Show at Cirencester! As we now wander into September, I look forward to seeing reports of the 25th Dutch Micro-car Rally, which was preceded by a 'Grand Tour' taking in the venues of the previous 24 years, many of which I have fond memories. I hope Colin Burton finds time to write since I understand he was there for the duration. It was a shame I didn't feel able to make it this year. With the arrival of something more summer-like, it was a golden opportunity to start catching up with some of the outstanding out-door jobs at the R.R. but unfortunately not the TW9! A ‘summer barbecue' at last too…

This coming week-end brings the 'relocated' National Micro-car Rally, now at Huntingdon Racecourse, Southwell (Newark) having fallen victim to the summer floods. Looks like I should be there and the forecast is good with summer making a final showing!

The London/South East Area Messerschmitt Night, where our London and Southern Area members (and any one else who happens by) are welcome to attend, continues to wander around the borders of Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and now Oxfordshire. It takes place on the last Tuesday of each Month, the next three being the 25th September, 30th October and 27th November 2007. August's get-together was at Ye Olde Leathern Bottle, Lewknor and brought a few, much needed, new faces. Perhaps we will drop by their again in September. Looking at my calendar, there is a strong chance that September's meeting may be re-scheduled a week earlier so to confirm where we will be (and when) please e-mail Tony Yates.
